Critical policy scholarship in education: An overview

This paper presents an overview of critical policy scholarship (CPS) in education. Historically, research has been dominated by what is commonly referred to as the science tradition, which positivist its philosophical stance and instrumentalist purpose—it focuses on producing knowledge relevant for decisions. However, with rise interpretive social inquiry 1970s against backdrop unique political developments 1980s, CPS emerged alternative perspective. review discusses scope foci education under four themes: methodological assumptions, interdisciplinary roots, enduring analytical goals, emerging empirical contexts. Implications prevalence inequality, Big Data digital panopticon educational policymaking are also briefly discussed. The concludes that although analysis have shifted considerably last decades, interest tools remain largely unchanged.
